MARTIN POPOFF'S BOOK: JUDAS PRIEST "PAINKILLERS"
 |
|
Lifelong fan and preeminent metal historian Martin Popoff examines the Priest's rich legacy album by album, anthem by anthem, along the way recounting the band's shocking split with Halford in the mid '90s and his triumphant return in 2003. Having interviewed all the principals in the band repeatedly over the years, Popoff gives a firsthand account of Priest's rocky, often comical ride through the '70s, and through the gold and platinum records of the '80s, expertly detailing the long road back to the arena headline status the band now enjoys as heavy metal's proudest ambassadors read more... |

Help A Metal-Head For The Holidays
NJ Club Fire - As previously reported, the Pirate's Den, virtually the only original metal club in the Philly/NJ/NYC area, burned down early Wednesday morning. In the last couple of years, it has played host to touring nationals like BEYOND FEAR, CHRIS CAFFERY, METAL CHURCH, DIRTY RIG, GEORGE LYNCH, and many others. It was also the weekly hangout for metal fans, who could see 4-6 fledgling bands every Friday and Saturday. Owner Brian Cohen, who lived in one of the upstairs apartments (and was taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation) was beset by a triple pre-Christmas whammy: losing his livelihood, home and the club. Compounding matters is the fact Cohen lost his leg, years before, in an accident, so the Pirate's Den was a safe place for him to work.
An online fund has been set up to help Cohen, who lost everything. Bands and area fans, as well as possibly some outside visitors, are working on benefits in his honor, but right now there's a serious need for immediate cash. At this charitable time of year, if we metalheads can forego one less pack of cigarettes, or have one less beer the next time you go out and instead, donate those few dollars to a true fan/supporter of the metallic cause, it would be greatly appreciated, click here to donate.
Thanx for taking the time to read this article. All the best to you and your family. Happy holidays!

Tim gets interviewed in "Metal, Rock, & Jazz" book, and gives a bit of singing knowledge in "Pro Secrets of Heavy Rock Sining" Book
The book "Metal, Rock, & JAzz" written by Harris M. Berger interviews with Timmy "The Ripper" Owens. Owens and other performers share their own experiences of the music, thereby challenging traditional notions of harmony and musical structure. Using ideas from practice theory and phenomenology, Berger shows that musical perception is a kind of practice, both creatively achieved by the listener and profoundly informed by social context. |
| |
"Pro Secrets Of Heavy Rock Singing" is the first instructional singing book to address exclusively rock sining in the singer's own words. The book was written by Bill Martin, a well versed individual when it comes to techniques of singing. Learn what it takes to sing like a professional, maximize your vocal range, increase power, and avoid burnout. Learn what to do on the road before and after a show to maintain your rocking voice. All that and more as international stars such as Bruce Dickinson, Geoff Tate, Joe Lynn Turner, Tim "Ripper" Owens, James LaBrie, David Draiman, John Bush, and Angela Gossow among others share their insider knowledge in "Pro Secrets Of Heavy Rock Singing". |

TIM RECORDS BLACK SABBATH SONG
Ripper Watch: Former Judas Priest singer and current Iced Earth frontman Tim "Ripper" Owens has recorded a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" with Michael Schenker, laying down vocals over the instrumental track at Billy Morris's Lava Room Recording studios. The song will be a part of producer Bob Kulick's all-star Sabbath tribute, due later this year. In the meantime, Owens is still working on original material that he describes as "heavy" with 13 Faces guitarist John Comprix, and he recently cut a short demo of Sabbath/Priest-influenced songs with members of cover band the Sickness. His website, www.timripperowens.com, will go live soon. |

BEYOND FEAR CD Release Date!
Beyond Fear, former Judas Priest and current Iced Earth vocalist, Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens’ new band, are scheduled to release their self-titled debut album on Steamhammer/SPV on May 5, 2006 in Germany, May 8,2006 in Europe and May 9, 2006 in the USA. “I always knew that I would bring out an album featuring my own compositions one day,” Owens explains. “But I didn't feel like a solo recording, I’d much rather perform my songs with a permanent band. That’s how Beyond Fear came about.”
The debut was recorded at the legendary Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida, under the direction of producer Jim Morris - a definite quality feature when it comes to the album’s sound and dynamics. Beyond Fear consist of Tim ‘Ripper’ Owens (vocals), John Comprix (rhythm & lead guitar), Dwane Bihary (rhythm guitar), Dennis Hayes (bass) and Eric Elkins (drums). The album consists of fourteen haunting metal numbers, which, according to Owens, “show unmistakably where my musical roots lie: in the classic heavy metal of the Eighties. However, I’ve transported that traditional metal style into the present, lending it its own touch.”
Tim "Ripper" Owens composed seven of the fourteen tracks on "Beyond Fear" on his own, the remaining seven were penned by Tim "Ripper" Owens together with guitarist John Comprix. “This is the best album I’ve ever recorded,” enthuses Owens, promising an extensive European tour starting summer 2006. And there seems to be no doubt in his mind about a continuation of his extremely successful collaboration with Iced Earth mastermind, Jon Schaffer: “I will definitely sing on the next Iced Earth album!”

"Happy Holidays!!! BEYOND FEAR recorded their debut album at Morrisound, check out the pictures... BEYOND FEAR is hoping to have a few song samples up soon.
In other Ripper News, Ripper gets Great Review for singing at the RoadRunner United 25th Anniversary Show, "Tim 'Ripper' Owens... absolutely stole the show with his uncanny high screaming and his ability to sustain that screaming for quite a long time. He impressed with his performance of the songs "Curse of the Pharoahs" and "Abigail" (both originally sung by King Diamond). He was joined by Jeff Waters from Annihilator for an excellent cover of the Canadian thrash pioneers' "Alison Hell." for whole article click here.

BEYOND FEAR Sign with SPV Worldwide!!!
"SPV is proud to announce the signing of BEYOND FEAR, the brand new hard-hitting metal outfit founded by current Iced Earth and former Judas Priest vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens. The band is preparing to enter the studio to record their debut album for a 2006 release.
"It feels great to sign with SPV," Owens commented. "I have been with them for quite some time now with Iced Earth, so I know what they can do. It is always nice to have a label that makes you feel like family, and that's what SPV does for you!"
The band is off to a fast start, having recently announced their participation in a series of American dates with Savatage leader Jon Oliva (Jon Oliva's Pain) and Savatage axeman Chris Caffery. The tour kicks off on September 9, 2005 in Cleveland OH, with remaining dates pending.
Never one to sit still for long, Owens began forming BEYOND FEAR last year during breaks in the Iced Earth touring schedule. The band also features John Comprix on lead and rhythm guitar, Dennis Hayes (ex-Winters Bane) on bass, Dwane Bihary on rhythm guitar, and drummer Eric Elkins. "This band means a lot to me and I'm having the time of my life doing it," continued Owens. "It's fun when you finally get to do what you want. That being said, let's get this machine called BEYOND FEAR out there for the world to hear and see."
SPV Managing Director, Manfred Schuetz, explains, "Tim is one of the 5 best singer’s in metal. He will deliver an album that will convince everyone. SPV is excited about the worldwide commitment."

COMING SOON...
"What's up everybody? As you can see, we are trying to get this thing up and running, and hopefully it will be complete real soon! As for Iced Earth, Jon's back is getting better, but it still isn't 100%! I myself can't wait to get Iced Earth back on the road, I think touring and seeing the fans is one of the most important thing's a band can do, we did tour America but had do postpone Europe (Europe, I love you and hope to see you real soon!) we will get it rolling as soon as we can!! As for my side project, Finishing up some demo stuff...also thought maybe the fans can come up with a good Idea to name it!! One already said maybe call it RIP, which Is cool, what do you guy's have?? I will talk at you soon!!"
