Just flicking through the latest issue of Terrorizer mag, and it made me think. There are some bands I just refuse to take any interest in, and they might be the best metal band in the world, but their name is so shit it puts me off. Bands like:
Ted Maul?
Between the buried and me?
The Dillinger Escape Plan?
Portion Control?
The Old Dead Tree?
High On Fire?
What kind of shit names are they for bands? They're fucking rubbish. I wouldn't buy an album by a band with a name like that.
Now, what about how a band looks? How about:
Between the Buried and Me? Again. Glasses aren't metal.
The Dillinger Escape Plan. Again. Side partings? WTF?
Caina. Token guy with short hair, glasses and poofy smart shirt. Fuck off, this is meant to be metal.
Hella. never heard of these cunts, but they look like politicians and poofs.
Hardkingrock. Seriously. You need to see a picture of this band. What's going on here I have no idea, but it's odd.
Black Dahlia Murder. Again, glasses aren't metal. Neither are fluffy beards a 15 year old would grow. Shave, get contacts, fuck off.
Am I being shallow? Are glasses and short, neat hair "Metal"? Would we love "Reign In Blood" if the band all had short hair, dress shirts and glasses? Would Tim look metal screaming out the start of "10000 strong" wearing specs?
Don't get me wrong - I'm not having a go at people with glasses. I've seen photos of Tim wearing glasses.
But when a band does a photo shoot, and on stage - shouldn't they try to look a bit more "cool"?
Think of those iconic photos of Slash - top hat, Les Paul, cigarette hanging out the side of his mouth. Cool as fuck. _________________ Xeper

Hi again Diocletian, you know something I actually share many of your views on your post. Whilst strictly conservative within the HM/HR genre, and something of a purist. Although my age shows signs of this trait I can`t help but notice in recent years the heavy metal, rock genre image sound and style including band names seems to have taken a nosedive! I know the music will always come first, however their idea and concepts have become broken from the traditional HM/HR scene. The band names are a joke, their image is ridiculous. I haven`t heard of any of these bands, but I can imagine they don`t exactly set the world on fire. And as Diocletian has mentioned whatever happened to those cool HM/HR stars of the day that probably looked cool the moment they woke out of bed! I`m a traditional HM/HR guy with long hair...it`s now been 27 years and I still have a full mop of hair and I`m still not going grey How this is I don`t know, what after many a headbanging session over indulgence in certain aspects of life? You know the booze and although I only smoke the legal straights, there was a time I enjoyed the more exotic choice tobacco`s I don`t know...such is life! Oh and I still wear the denims and leathers...still macho after all these years

Theres a reason KISS, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, and AC/DC have millions of dollars and fans and these guys don't. Fans don't listen with their ears, they listen with their eyes. This was why most (yuck) early punk was successful. We all got into Ozzy because he had demons everywhere, and looked like one. Even Ripper falls victim to this, when I was 14 I saw leather and spikes WITH the voice - that sold me hardcore. When I see a thrash metal band play, when I see nail spikes, uncontrollable hair flying, and ripped jeans I get a wee bit more pumped. You naturally have to have great songs and musicianship, but its also a business. Blue Oyster Cult, God Bless them, I love that band, but theres a reason KISS wasn't opening for them long, and things became vise-versa. Just like M. Manson, I hate his music and message, but his image/name got him far. Sigh... too far. _________________

you are being a bit shallow, but lets face it, thats the way life is. A name, or a look can put you off, yes. It's like that with the bands that try to look like Immolation (or whatever the fuck they are called), I don't like that look, so I shy away from listening to them. They may have talent, but I could care less. _________________

Ha ha, yes BP I've seen that pic of Tim before.
But he doesn't go out on stage like that does he? He doesn't appear on album covers like that. You didn't see him astride the Painkiller motorbike wearing his specs did you?
These bands are heroes, and the geeks like Dillinger Escape just look crap.
Gimme Slash, Jimmy Page, Kerry King, Nikki Sixx any day. It's all overblown fun!
Keep the specs and side partings for at home with the kids and barbecue. _________________ Xeper

I understand and agree with a lot of this. However, 'High On Fire' is a GREAT name for a band. I don't like the band at all, but I LOVE the name. Very Metal name. _________________ Drink beer. Watch Braveheart. Listen to Heavy motherfuckin Metal.

I just dont understand that name. What does it mean? Are they high, as in stoned, somehow from inhaling fire? Wouldn't that burn?
Or are they high up in the air above a fire?
Or are they high up in the air ON FIRE?
Or are they high (stoned) and on fire? Doesn't sound like much fun.
I believe they're probably the best band out of all the ones I mentioned though. I just don't like the name so would rather get hold of the new Blood Red Throne album than High On Fire's. _________________ Xeper
