I'm sure some will disagree with me, but I think Ripper owns this song.

Halford never could sing it properly.

Yeah, I don't think Rob even did a good job with it on the Painkiller tour...

Tim has always bloody nailed this!

Mmm...I`m not too sure here, back when Painkiller originally came out Rob was in fair form and live performing it.
Of course these days it`s a different story, Ripper nailed it for sure, but I have left this one out. Maybe there could have been a dead heat guys! PowerKnight Twisted Evil

I kind of understand what your saying PowerKnight but in all honesty ive never seen a live performance of Halford singing Painkiller nearly as good as Tim did.

Like charge said not even in his Painkiller years could he pull it off.....

1991 Halford

Many thanks ripperowens213 for the link, yeh I can see what you and everyone means. I have probably been so used to the studio and video version, after that my leanings are to our Ripper.

Back in 91, even the band itself admitted Rob's voice was in poor shape during the Painkiller tour.

I saw that tour, and he could not sing the song properly. It may have been an off night, but he had to sing in a low pitch because he was completely unable to hit the highs.

Painkiller studio version is insane. Rob sounds awesome on it, but the live versions I have heard he absolutely destroys the song. I would like to hear Tim do a clean studio version. I bet it would sound really fucking good.

In all sincerity, no one has done justice to this song since the album version.
As much as I love Tim, he always got to sing it a whole step down, making it easier. Rob did it in standard tuning and shrieked his god damned balls off.
Nothing compares to that original version.

This has to be Halford at his best, I remember when I first bought the video back in 83. Rob go`s through all his multi-facet range on this track, superb. What we all have to remember both Rob and Tim surely are two very few singers who can actually sing the very demanding PAINKILLER! PowerKnight Twisted Evil

I've heard a lot of versions of this song, including the studio version, and I truly believe that this song was written for Ripper. The guy just nails it every time with ease.

Even the mighty Metal God bends over and strains with all his might to sing this song and he still can't do it.

This is why Ripper is my favourite vocalist.

wonders if in the studio if Rob had to do a few takes of it, or sung the song in stages....as live everyone knows even back in the early 90's he couldnt even sing it live properly....what you lot think?
